Emerging Designer of the Year 2020
Amery Oke-Johnston

Amery Oke-Johnston is a multi-disciplined designer based in Melbourne. At the beginning of 2019, he was made Senior Designer and Lead Digital Designer at Pop & Pac, achieving this role at the age of 25. As of March 2020, he has been the Director of his own practice Thought & Found and Creative Director of Sissy Screens since November 2019, a LGBTQIA+ not-for-profit organization, championing queer film and screen culture; showcasing and celebrating queer creatives and their work.

His methodology is built on the unexpected, the importance of meaningful, intelligent outcomes and the occasional happy accident. Through challenging typical conventions of branding, Amery seeks to generate unique and engaging outcomes for each and every project. As a transgender person of colour, inclusivity and diversity play a central role in his practice. This enthusiasm lies within providing individuals, businesses and communities alike access to services that clearly communicate their intent, cause & passion; delivering projects with impactful narratives that align vision and voice. The foundation of his approach is derived from the concept that design should not only engage the mind, but also touch the heart. Amery’s practice, Thought & Found, is driven by passion and the pursuit of equity. This ambition has seen him work with a wide variety of clients, which have included the support of marginalised communities and individuals through in-kind donations of services.

Congratulations Amery!
